Learning music online can be just as effective (and fun!) as in-person lessons when you prepare your space and setup properly.
Your learning environment matters:
Quiet – choose a room with minimal noise from TV, siblings, pets, or street sounds.
Comfortable seating – for guitar, use a chair without arms; for piano, use your regular bench.
Good lighting – natural daylight is best. If it’s evening, place a lamp nearby so your hands and face are clear on camera.
Enough space – make sure you have room to move and adjust your camera if needed.
Your teacher needs to see both hands and your guitar clearly to help with technique and posture.
Sit slightly turned toward the camera (30–45° angle) so both hands are visible.
Keep the camera at chest or shoulder level.
Place it 1.5–2 meters away so your whole guitar fits in the frame.
Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you — it makes you look like a silhouette.
For piano, we want to see both your hands and posture.
Place the camera at the side or at a slight diagonal so both hands are visible.
Make sure most of the keyboard can be seen, not just a few keys.
Avoid placing the camera where it shakes when you play.
4. Audio Setup
Clear sound is just as important as clear video:
Use your device’s microphone or an external one if available.
Headphones help reduce echo and make communication clearer.
Turn off background noises such as fans, TVs, or loud appliances.
5. Tech Preparation
Sit close to your Wi-Fi router for a stable connection.
Use a computer or tablet if possible — they are easier to position than a phone.
Do a short test call before your first lesson.
Plug in your device or make sure it’s fully charged.
6. Before Each Lesson
Tune your instrument and prepare your music.
Keep a pencil nearby to take notes.
Join the call 2–3 minutes early to check your setup.
Why This Matters
Good camera angles and clear sound make the lesson smoother and help you improve faster.
Think of this as creating your own “music corner” — a space that inspires you every time you sit down to play.
